How To Add Personal Touches To Your Home

You guys have been ALL ABOUT my home decor on Instagram (seriously, those posts are some of my most liked!) so I thought I would share my favorite way to add some personal flair to your home or apartment. Of course I have a ton of non-personalized decor, but nothing makes a house, apartment, or even a dorm room feel like home than a couple of unique touches that represent you and your personality. Here are a few of the ways I do this in my place.

Felt Boards

I've been in love with the felt board trend since it started picking up a few years ago but only recently purchased one myself. I've had the board for about 6 months and for the better part of them it has been sitting on my shelf gathering dust. I did a little pinterest-ing for inspiration and over these last few weeks I've been playing around with different quotes and sayings.

My felt board has been a great way to express some creativity in my space each day (or lets be real, once a week) and set the tone for my work day, the weekend, or the holiday season. I love to put up favorite quotes, holiday themed messages (see above) and anything else that I want! It's a great way to feel like you're changing something in the decor without spending any $$$ and it also gives you an awesome way to add in some words that will make your day!

Add Photos

This is where I'm slightly hypocritical. I sadly don't have my photos out and about in my apartment! I think I have one photo on the fridge and another on my bathroom mirror, but that's it. I do however have a few empty frames that are waiting to have photographs put in them, haha! Does anyone else ever purchase pretty frames they see before they have photos to fill them? Either way, adding a few photos of friends, family members and pets is a super simple way to personalize your home.

Statement Pieces

Whether it's your favorite saying in a frame, some vases with your favorite flowers (real or fake) placed throughout your home, a location or map hung on the wall, or something in between, I love the idea of taking something that means something to you and turning it into a statement in your place. I recently worked with Mapiful to create two custom maps that will soon be hanging above my bed. With their size I had to make custom frames (I chose the 18x24 size) because there wasn't a design that I really liked, however I'm so excited with the design and will be getting them back in two weeks with you all!

Anyhoo, these maps are super personal to me as they represent the birth place of each of my parents. The map above is for Redwood City, the city my dad was born in and my hometown. I've shared the map for my mom's birthplace on Instagram...it might surprise you where she's from! But getting back to personalization decor, I think getting a sentimental statement piece for your home really, well, makes a statement! It doesn't have to be something like a map, it could be anything at all that means something to you. Maybe you have a favorite pet that meant/means the world to you and you want to have a portrait made of them or you recorded your heartbeats when you and your husband said "I do" and you want to have those framed. Whatever it is, if it's something to you and you can make it look beautiful or fun, turn it into a piece for your home!

If You Can't Buy It...

Make it! DIYing and crafting is such a fun hobby of mine, but I especially love painting when I have the time. The current art above my bed was made by me during my freshman year of college! And I'm not just talking about art here, you can DIY so many projects from updating an antique dresser to painting a statement wall. Every time you look at your craft you'll have all the memories, along with the satisfaction of a job well done, to go along with it!

Monograms and Initials

I have a wooden carving of my monogram hanging in my gallery wall and a gold 'S' displayed in my living room and yes it may seem slightly silly to display your initials in your own home, but I love the personal mark it makes. Now don't go crazy here, you just want to have a touch of monogram in your place. No one wants to see their initials EVERYWHERE, not even you.

What are your favorite ways to add a personal statement to your home?

  4. That's such a smart and special idea with the maps! I love that, especially as a nod to your parents. I found put my initials on the way in some greenery letters I found at JoAnn Fabric. They were such a steal and I love how they bring life to the space.
