Shopping Your Own Closet

Hello hello friends! Today I'm here to talk about something that you don't always find on fashion blogs...your own closet and re-wearing your own favorite items. Most style blogs, my own included, regularly share new clothes that are trendy, classic, or just hitting stores to give you some fashion and shopping inspiration. The tough thing about this job is definitely trying to keep up with the joneses and purchase every new trend that crops up. Even tougher is when your bank account does not allow that. This isn't realistic for many bloggers, let alone any of you reading here!

I don't have the funds to be purchasing new outfits all the time, but I do know how to make my closet work for me! New clothes, although great for updating your wardrobe, aren't necessary to be a stylish person. Learning to restyle outfits is something you should be doing always (I don't know anyone who doesn't do this), although you don't have to wear something in the same way each time. When I get in the shopping mood, I always go through my closet first to make sure that what I'm searching for isn't already somewhere in there. You'd be surprised what you can find when you search in the dark depths of your wardrobe!

Spring always gets me into this mood, typically because it's the time of year that I do go through my closet to see what I have, what I want to keep, and what I don't need/use anymore. (P.S. A good rule of thumb is that if you wouldn't buy it now or pick it out in a store, it shouldn't be in your closet!) This leads to finding so many forgotten gems! One of those gems for me was this purple dress that I purchased two summers ago.

Since I haven't styled it in so long, I realized I have a fresh set of accessories that I can pair it with. I recently picked up these sandals from Target and think they make a great addition to the simplicity of the dress. You all know I'm a fan of reusing accessories, hello I've been using my Kate Spade cat purse ever since I got it! I grabbed that, my monogram necklace, and some old bracelets, and suddenly I have a whole new look with (mostly) older items. Obviously everyone is wearing clothes from their own closet every day (totally jealous if somehow you have a new outfit every day of your life!), however what I'm talking about today is 'shopping' from your closet.

The easiest way to do this is to look at your closet with a new set of eyes. Go through each article of clothing and see if anything has come back in trend or is currently trending and wasn't when you bought it. That oversized colorful sweater you bought on a whim? Guess what, the 90's are coming back so that's totally in style now! Off the shoulder tops and dresses you bought last year? Still trending! Don't shrug a piece off just because you haven't seen potential in it for a while.

Think of the trends that are currently happening, the colors that have been popular lately, and the styles that you've seen in magazines. More than likely you have more than one something that works within these categories. Now take the items that you've gathered and make outfits with them. You can pair them with things that you used to wear with them, but also try and find two new looks that work. These looks can be accessories based (like the outfit above!) or a completely restructured outfit.

My best tip for finding new outfits is organizing. Getting all your clothes to be as visible as possible makes things so much easier! If you can't see what you own, you won't be wearing it which makes at least part of your wardrobe useless! Organize as best you can to make sure things are seen and worn and not forgotten! Layering is another tip that I love to restyle items that I already love. Layering never goes out of style and it's a great way to incorporate more pieces for everyday wear. This is great for cooler months when you want to wear that sun dress but it's too cold out (cardigans and tights are your friend!).

Another thing I like to do is to have a stylish friend go through my closet. Ask them to style some of your clothes and see what they come up with. Everyone has a different eye and you may be surprised what they find!

What are your favorite ways to restyle what you own?

  1. First, you are adorable! Second, like you said, I don't have money to keep buying new outfits all the time. I've definitely had to learn how to rewear multiple outfits. :) Now that I'm used to it, it's actually pretty fun to see what I can come up with. :)

  13. Such sensible advice, we can't be buying new all the time. An honestly, I think we've all come home from the shops at least once with something new only to realise we had soemthing really similar already hanging in the wardrobe!

  15. I love shopping my closet! I go through phases when I wear the same handful of things over and over because I love them (and usually only my husband sees my repeated outfits). When I feel like mixing things up, I just look through what I already have.

I have been buying more clothes in the last year since I'm at a slightly higher but still healthy weight, meaning the clothes I bought when I was underweight no longer fit. I'm still sticking mostly with classics, like jeans and neutrals, while splurging on a few comfy colorful pieces from LuLaRoe. :)

  16. Spring is almost here and we can't deny the fact that it's the only time when we girls can use our complete wardrobe freely. Thanks to this post for such amazing spring ideas. Now, even I can use my whole closet in a unique and stylish way.Since its summer time, so I have collected this amazing sexy luxury lingerie from cosabella. It's elegant and the stuff is superb. I just love it and will definitely suggest to try it.

  17. Amazing post shared! I cannot recommend taking the time to actually try your clothes on enough. Whether you’ve gone through a big life change like having a baby, or simply haven’t revisited pieces in your closet for awhile, it is so helpful to remind yourself what the clothes look like on you. You’re much more likely to remember why you bought the piece in the first place.
