What To Do When You Lose A Pet

Last Tuesday my family had to put down my little sweetheart Baby due to kidney disease. This isn't my first time losing one of my cats though. In middle school and high school I lost the two cats I had had since birth, two other tough losses. Baby's passing, however feels different somehow. I think it's because I was here from the start of him and his brother Tux's introduction into our family, whereas with my old cats they were already older than I was, and my parents had raised them from kittens to 20+ years old. Obviously I loved them dearly, but I feel I've taken Baby's death much harder than theirs. Baby was one of my best friends, and will forever be a part of me.

I was having a rough time these past few days, and decided to google what others have said about the loss of a pet, but didn't really find anything. So I decided to write a post of my own to maybe help someone out there if they unfortunately have to go what I'm going through now. This is just what has personally worked for me in helping, at least a little in Baby's passing. Hopefully this advice will help someone else as well.

1. Don't Be Selfish

We had known for a few years that Baby had kidney disease. He was getting by and was happy as can be, but the weekend before his passing he was suddenly not himself. He wasn't eating or drinking, and spent all of his time on the floor and trying to hide from us. It was clear that something was wrong, but we all, myself especially, wanted to pretend that it wasn't as bad as it was. If your pet isn't acting like themselves, especially if they aren't eating or drinking, take them to the vet to see what's happening. Hopefully it's just a cold, but if it is something more serious, I urge you to think about how your pet wants to spend his/her last days. If they will be suffering in any way and aren't going to be able to live "their best life" then consider putting them out of their suffering. For Baby, he had gone into liver failure, and there's nothing we could have done, unless we wanted to give him fluids to keep him for another few days, which would have been completely unfair to do to him. I made this my first piece of advice because it was so hard for me to see that it was my cat's time to go, since I didn't want my time with him to end. Please please please don't be selfish with your pet's time.

2. Allow Yourself To Grieve

I've been crying all week. I cried when I thought he was just sick and might get better, I cried when my mom said we should make an appointment with the vet, and I cried when he took his final breath in my arms. I cried and cried and cried, and I'm still crying. If you're like me, your pets are your best friends. They've been with you for years, you can talk with them about anything, and they are your family. Losing a pet is a huge loss, and it will take a lot of time, so let yourself grieve as long as you need to.

3. Let Your Other Pets Grieve

Baby's brother Tux is still with us and we were worried how he was going to take Baby's passing. We normally have a vet come to our home, but unfortunately she was booked that day, so we took Baby to a pet hospital, but then brought him home for our regular vet to pick him up that night. Our vet said it was important to let Tux see Baby's body, so we let him come up to him, smell him, and notice that he wasn't reacting to him anymore. It's an important step in your other pet's grieving process so they have some understanding that he/she is gone and that they weren't taken somewhere and never came back. Tux still searches for Baby in the house, which is 100% normal. It's very sad to watch, but eventually they will come to understand. Pets can grieve just like humans, especially if your pets knew each other for many many years. Try your best to give them some extra love during this time, it's hard for them too.

4. Always Remember The Good Times

Try your best not to remember your pet as sick or in pain, they wouldn't want you to have that as your last memories of them. It helps me to remember all the cute little things that were just so "Baby." Things like how he liked to sharpen his claws on walls, even though he didn't have any. If you focus on the happy times, it will hopefully bring you happiness instead of sadness. Do I still think of all the cute things he used to do and cry about it because I miss him? Of course I do. But I want to remind myself of these happy memories of him so that I will always have them in my mind when I think of him in the future.

Sorry this post was a little different and more personal than normal, but I really felt like I needed to write this, even if it was just to help myself in this process. Hopefully this will reach someone who needs it.

Dedicated to Baby, AKA: My sweet little prince, Buhbee, Babel, Signature prime Baby, Mr.Baby, Pretty boy. I hope you gained your claws over the Rainbow Bridge.

JORD Wood Watches

I've had my eye on a JORD watch since seeing them on my Instagram feed on multiple accounts. I thought they were so unique and beautiful, so when JORD reached out to me I was incredibly excited to work with them! I've never had a cool, stylish watch before, so I was looking everywhere for a women's watch that didn't break the bank, but also looked feminine and wouldn't overpower my wrist with a huge face. I chose the Fieldcrest Maple because it matched all of those qualifications!

Bracelets: Ice Bracelet, Spike Bracelet (Use code SAMIMAST15 for 15% off!)

I love how simple, yet beautiful it is, and I feel like this style really lets the uniqueness of the wood speak for itself. The face of the watch is the perfect size for my small wrist, something that I normally have issues with looking at other brands. I normally wear dainty bracelets for everyday, and I love how this watch can now be the statement piece in my arm party.

I also have a bit of a soft spot in my life for things made out of wood. A lot of the furniture in my house was made by either my dad or grandpa out of wood, so I know that there is a lot of quality and work that goes into the process of woodworking. You can tell that these watches are delicately made and the fact that it's wood just means more love went in to creating this beautiful timepiece.

If you're looking for a perfect watch that will go well with every accessory in your jewelry box, I highly recommend the Fieldcrest Maple! Although I do prefer gold, the blonde wood matches with silver as well, considering the face of the watch is silver. Whoever says mixing metals is a bad idea never tried pairing gold bracelets with this watch. ;)

JORD watches is also doing a giveaway with me for $75 towards your own beautiful wood watch! All you have to do is go here, enter your name and email and then you're done! Everyone's a winner in this giveaway, because even if you don't win you will still get an email for $20 off your watch! The giveaway ends on 9/11 so go enter before it's too late.

Do you have a JORD watch, if not, what's your favorite watch that you own?

5 Essentials You Need For College With BabbleBoxx

My final year of college classes start back up on the 29th, and it's so weird to think that this will be my last first day of school! I know some of you have already started your classes and are well on your way to either figuring out college for the first time or going in more confident than previous years, but I wanted to share a few items that are game changers for the college lifestyle that you may not be aware of.

I was super excited when BabbleBoxx approached me with this College Shevival themed box of goodies for the everyday college gal, and couldn't wait to share them with you on the blog today! I think these items would be great to buy for yourself, but would also make a fun care package for your favorite college girl.

1. FUJIFILM INSTAX Mini 70 in Island Blue

Y'all this camera is the cutest thing ever. I was so excited to see the latest model of FUJIFILM's instax mini series in the box and I can't wait to take capture some of my college experiences before leaving Chapman. (Definitely not tearing up as I write this...) These INSTAX pictures print in 90 seconds and the quality is so sharp, perfect for sharing with friends and family to put in their photo albums or decorate the dorm with! I think having physical reminders of loved ones in your dorm is the best way to add a personal touch to your space, and are great to look at when you're feeling homesick!

If you notice in the photo below it has a little mirror to guide you with taking selfies, how perfect is that? I can't be the only one who loves to take selfies with their friends when hanging out on campus, so if you're like me this will be your favorite feature. The INSTAX Mini 70 will definitely be tucked away in my backpack when I get to school so I can snap some quick photos while on campus!

2. Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula FlipBalms

I think all of you know by now how completely obsessed with lip balms I am. I probably have three on hand at any given moment, so these three FlipBalms were a welcome addition to my addiction. I was lucky enough to receive all three flavors: Juicy Watermelon, Creamy Coconut and Ripe Mango, and I honestly can't choose a favorite because they're all just that good. I love the flip to open design because even if I'm holding my Starbucks in one hand, I can use the other to open and moisturize quickly. I'm also a big fan of the fact that these FlipBalms are packed with natural ingredients like pure cocoa butter, raw shea butter and vitamin E, but are also free of parabens, phthalates, petrolatum, and gluten. I don't know about you all, but I'm always a little weary of the products that contain ingredients that I've never heard of!

3. Simply Sensitive Summer's Eve® Cleansing Clothes

We've all had those moments when we're feeling, well, not so fresh. Maybe you've skipped a shower or two because you had multiple tests in a row and your sorority decided that now was the perfect time to have some random recruitment training making for multiple late nights. Whatever the reason, these Summer's Eve cloths are great in a pinch when you need to refresh. In scents like Island Splash and Sheer Floral, these hypoallergenic and alcohol-free clothes are great to pull out of your gym bag or backpack and provide discreet personal care, leaving you confidently fresh.

4. GreenPan Mini Ceramic Non-Stick Egg Pan

So I'll be honest with you, I'm not the sharpest knife in the kitchen, or however that saying goes. I know how to make a few key meals and I stick to them, because it's all I really know. But getting this cute little 5'' egg pan is making me want to experiment a little more with cooking this school year. Especially because it came with a mini cookbook of delicious recipes!

Not only does this little pan take up barely any space, which we all know is precious in a crowded dorm, but it's also made with Thermolon™ceramic non-stick which means you don't have to use as much oil as other pans and will make for super easy clean up! It also has a stay-cool non-slip silicone handle, so you won't burn yourself when grabbing the pan, something I've done one too many times...

You can get your own GreenPan for 20% off and with free shipping until 9/4 if you use the code SCHOOL20 here, and then we can be cooking twins!

5. Zebra Pen Assortment

I. Love. Color-coding. If you look in my planners or notes for classes, you will see a rainbow of colors decorating the pages. I'm never one to stick with the usual black pen for class, because I feel like colors make everything more exciting. And trust me, some classes need to have that extra bit of excitement added to my notes when I go to study them. These Zebra Pens are perfect for adding that extra bit of fun!

Also, have you ever wrote pretty, completely perfect notes only to have an accidental smudge come in and ruin that perfection? It's the worst! Thankfully, this isn't an issue with these Sarasa Gel pens with their Rapid Dry Ink technology! These and the Z-Grip Plus Ballpoint pens are smooth and quick drying, perfect for anyone who takes a little too much pride in having those pretty notes. (It's the little things!) I also received an H-301 Steel Highlighter in yellow as well as an F-301 steel ballpoint pen which are perfect highlighting and annotating textbooks!
