Boxy Charm Unboxing February 2015

I decided to bite the bullet and get a beauty box subscription. My friend Stephanie loves her subscription to Ipsy, and I've read about a ton of girls who blog about their own subscriptions to various  boxes. I shopped around and did some digging as to which box I wanted to subscribe to, and ended up choosing Boxy Charm!

It's $21 per box, and you get 4 full sized and 1 luxury size product. I really wanted a box where I wasn't just going to receive only samples, and I took a peak at how this box has been improving over the last couple of months. I decided on this box because of the increased quality/value of products of the box and comparable prices.

Look how cute the box is! I absolutely love the confetti strings.

I never use foundation or concealer, so this Mistura Beauty Solutions C-2-P Complexion Corrector ($36.99 retail) won't be of much use to me unfortunately. Every once in a long while I'll use a bit of concealer just to hide a red spot, but other than that, this will probably just sit in my makeup bag.

If you ignore the horrible quality on both of these pictures that would be great, haha. I actually really love this Jing Ai Velvet Lip Jewel in Raspberry Ice ($22 retail). It's definitely brighter than what I would normally wear, but I'll find places to wear it! It's a nice matte lipstick, and the color stays on very well.

I haven't used this Mullein and Sparrow Mini Facial Mask ($15 retail) yet, but from what others are saying, it's great! I guess the full size face mask is pretty big, because this isn't like a one time use size or anything around there. I'm going to be able to get a good number of masks out of this bottle. The only weird thing is that it's a powder mask, something I've never used before. Anyone have any tips for how to correctly use powder masks?

I don't claim to be a makeup expert, and to be quite honest, I don't know the difference between what brush does this and what brush does that. So this Modern Minerals Duo Fiber Mini Round Brush ($15 retail) could be the best round brush of all, and I probably wouldn't know. The information card that comes with the box says it's great at creating smoky eyes, blending, and shading. What I know is that it's extremely soft!

This ncLA Nail Lacquer in "Heart Attack" ($16 retail) is probably my favorite item from the box. I'm a huge nail polish junkie, and this is just another great piece for my collection. Essentially it's just clear nail polish with pink and red hearts. Oh how I wish this box had arrived by Valentine's Day!!!

I paid $21 for this box, and the value of its contents was over $100! I'm very impressed, and even though some of the items won't be getting as much use as others, I really enjoy what I received. I'll most likely be ordering the next box, so stay tuned!

Making Changes

I don't know if it's the fact that I've been watching too much America's Next Top Model or just the realization that maybe eating 6 mini muffins in a day isn't the best thing, but I'm starting to feel unhealthy in my habits. One of my resolutions for this year was to be healthier, or at least make some changes to get that way, and I feel like I might have lost track of that.

Creating a healthy lifestyle isn't something that happens all at once, but it is something that you have to work on. The most important change for me personally is to drink more water. It's recommended to drink eight 8 ounce glasses a day, and I'm going to attempt that. Sorry Diet Coke, I'm going to have to give you up for a while.

Another thing that I want to get into the habit of is exercising regularly. I definitely count my walking to and from class, but really I shouldn't. I need to take actual time out of my day and do some physical activity. Whether this means walking a couple of blocks, going to my school's gym (intimidating beyond belief), or just doing some squats in my room, I need to get moving.

And no matter how much I love carbs, that can't be all I eat. Yes I'm in college and rice and pasta are the easiest things to make, but should that be all I'm eating? No of course not. Putting in the effort to buy fruits and vegetables and leave all the junk at the store is all I need to do to fix this. I'm an adult, and I need to start making the decisions that are right for my health.

Now this whole health kick doesn't have to mean that I give up everything that I love, but to take it in moderation. Go with your cravings, but don't over indulge on them. If you really want that chocolate chip cookie, eat it, but don't eat three. You're out at dinner with friends and want to splurge, get a soda! Don't make yourself upset by not enjoying the things that you love, but don't make them the essential parts of your diet.

I would love to hear your tips on living a healthy lifestyle!

Pretty In Pink

Ahhh! It's been a whole week since I posted last! Sorry about that guys! I meant to post something over the weekend, but I ended up having two essays that needed to be done for Monday. But I'm back, and hopefully I can be a little more consistent with writing here!

Today's post is about what I did wore on Valentine's Day!

Dress (similar) | Cardigan (similar) | Bag (similar) | Shoes | Sunglasses |

A few friends and I went to a place called The Lab in Costa Mesa. It's described as an "anti-mall" and is a cute little hipster place. We ate a nice lunch at a restaurant called The Gypsy Den and then spent the rest of our time taking photos! It was a great day to spend with friends, and I loved exploring more of Orange County.

I would love to hear what you all have been up to recently!

Credit to my roommate Nicole for taking the pictures! Check out her blog here!

20 Things I've Learned in 20 Years

Definitely a little late on this one, but my birthday was last month! I've seen other bloggers do posts like these, and was excited to do one myself. So here are twenty things I've learned in my twenty years of life! (Wow, I'm two decades old. Still sort of a shocker.)

1. Friendships will end, but all friendships have a purpose in your life.

2. Sometimes you'll be the only one you can count on.

3. It's okay to not know what you want out of life. There's a lot of time to think it over.

4. Getting one bad grade (or a few) won't kill you.

5. No matter how much you lie to yourself, running isn't fun.

6. Being a little narcissistic is a good thing, it's great to love yourself.

7. Always be prepared. This goes for any situation.

8. Reading and painting nails are the best ways to relax.

9. Don't be ashamed of your music taste.

10. No matter how badly someone/something makes you feel, remember that good times are on the horizon.

11. Never miss an opportunity to travel.

12. Don't be afraid to reach out to others if you need help or have questions. This goes for friends, school, business ventures, etc.

13. Pets can always make you feel better.

14. A good lipstick can make any outfit.

15. There are friends that you can really share everything with, always keep in touch with them.

16. Love your parents, they mean well.

17. Retail therapy is real, and it's an addicting bad habit.

18. Even though it feels great to sleep in, it will always feel like you're wasting half of your day.

19. Math is the enemy. Not true for everyone, but for me.

20. If you want to do something (like start a blog...), do it!

Colorful Donut Nail Art Tutorial

I absolutely love doing nail tutorials for you guys. I know that I'm no professional, but I think that just makes it easier on all of you who are just like me! Sometimes I see photos on nail art instagrams and I really want to do something, but it just seems way too difficult! The nails on this post may actually seem difficult, but honestly they were some of the easiest I've done, even if you're a beginner you can accomplish these!

Start off with a base of white nails.

Then with a toothpick, use a light tan color to make donut shapes (I put them in different spots so it wasn't all the same design).

Next add the "frosting" colors that you want onto each donut. I used a dark brown, white, and pink, but you can really use any color that you want. Again, do this with a toothpick!

Add sprinkles/extra frosting zig zags in various colors!

Very simple and easy to do! Make sure between each step you let the polish dry completely. You don't want things to start smudging and make you start all over! This was my first attempt at using toothpicks to do nail art, and it's amazing. It feels like you're just holding and writing with a pencil.

A close-up of the final product!

Hope you guys enjoyed this tutorial! Tag #theclassicbrunette on Instagram and Twitter if you recreate this, I'd love to see them!

Elegant Black Gowns

On one of my usual online shopping trips I stumbled across a beautiful (and way beyond my budget) dress that was all black. I kind of became a little obsessed with these types of dresses and started scoping out similar ones. They're all just so gorgeous!

The one that started it all

Here's a few others that I found, and also fell in love with. Unfortunately they're all ridiculously pricey.

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

Hello February!

I secretly love Valentine's Day. I don't care that I'm single and am supposed to be bitter about it, I think it's great. Every year my parents normally get me something small for the holiday like some candy, or when I was younger a stuffed animal, so it holds a special place in my heart. In recent years I've just gotten cards from them since I've been away at school, but still, I think it's a nice sentiment.

In my opinion you don't need to be in a relationship to celebrate Valentine's Day. It's a holiday to celebrate your loved ones, friends, and yourself! I've searched around for a couple goodies to spread the love!
