January Favorites

January has been wonderful to me! What a great start to 2015. I've traveled to New Orleans, turned twenty, and have planned out some exciting things for the future! I can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings me.

This lipstick is so creamy, yet stays on forever. One time I actually forgot that I was wearing it and wiped my mouth with a paper towel, and it didn't budge! The color is also wonderful, a bright, but not crazy fuchsia pink.

My friend has this bag (or at least the earlier H&M version of it) and I've been lusting over it ever since I saw her with it. It's durable, soft, and fits a ridiculous amount of things in it for its size. Not to mention, it looks way pricier than it actually is! The perfect go-to stylish handbag.

Mug

The mug isn't available anymore online, but I got it from Urban Outfitters (some stores should still carry it!!). It's so sassy, and totally me.

I actually bought these while in New Orleans at an old record store. Normally cat-eye sunglasses look funky on me, but these were adorable. I don't own any "fun" sunglasses, just practical ones, so I felt that these were definitely necessary!

Aren't these fun? I'm a sucker for bright colored heels, and when I saw these on The College Prepster I just had to get them. My parents bought them for me as a Christmas present, and although they aren't the most comfortable shoes in the world, they are the prettiest.

I got an iPhone 6 for Christmas/My Birthday, and needed a case, obviously. I actually went to Best Buy to get a completely different case, but it wasn't available! I saw this one and thought it was a great choice. What I didn't realize when I bought it was how durable it is. It's actually two cases in one! There's a softer case that detaches from the hardcover which makes for ultra protection. My phone tends to bounce around a lot, so the more protection, the better!

New Orleans Part II

Here are some more pictures from where I went in New Orleans. Hope you all enjoy!

I went on a swamp tour one of the days, and it was probably the best part of my trip. The small airboat we went on went about 45mph and it felt like I was traveling through the swamps in The Princess and the Frog. It was so calm and beautiful, and although I didn't see as many animals I had expected/wanted to, it was great.

My absolute favorite part of the swamp tour was holding this little guy! His name was Bob and he was so cute. He's a baby alligator, under a year old, and he was super soft. The second time I held him he got a little frustrated though, and I almost threw him back at the boat driver. Oops!

On our free day a group of us headed over to the Garden District on the street car and did some shopping as well as house spotting. We saw the American Horror Story Coven house and all took pictures in front of it. It's so huge and beautiful, and I just want to live in it. So much walking that day though, my feet were killing me!

On the last night we had a farewell dinner with the whole class. We had a preset menu and this was called The Taste of New Orleans. It had gumbo, red beans and rice, and jumbalaya. To be quite honest, it didn't taste all that amazing, but it looked nice!

After dinner our last adventure was to this late night art market on Frenchman street. There were a bunch of little vendors with jewelry, art prints, clothes, etc. It was also absolutely freezing that night, and I couldn't feel my face when we were walking back to our hotel.

This was one of the greatest weeks of my life, and I'm so happy with all the friends and memories that I made in New Orleans!

New Orleans Part 1

Sorry for the abrupt leave of absence, but I didn't realize how packed my days were going to be in New Orleans! This trip was part of a travel class where we studied Voodoo, so our itinerary contained a few museums, cemetery tours, and a few restaurants, but for the most part we had free time. I signed up for this course over a year ago, and seeing it come to life was amazing.

We stayed at Hotel Provincial in the French Quarter, otherwise known as the most haunted hotel in America. There are five buildings within the hotel, and I happened to stay in the most haunted one. It used to be a Civil War hospital, and I was pretty freaked out about staying there. However, after the first night I realized there was nothing to be worried about. My roommate and I even had our beds shake one night and I wasn't scared! The picture is of the courtyard of the newer buildings, the fountain was so pretty, and I'm just obsessed with the red brick. Fun fact, they shot scenes from The Vampire Diaries in this courtyard!

The architecture was so breathtaking in New Orleans. I was seriously taking pictures of every single building, I have a problem. But I really just couldn't help it, the French Quarter was beautiful. My future home needs one of these balconies.

A couple blocks down from the hotel was Jackson Square, the place I feel I spent most of my time. One of my favorite things about the city was the art that people sold on the streets, as well as the live jazz music that was on nearly every street corner. There's so much culture there, and it's just not the same walking down a street without hearing lively music.

A little further up Jackson Square was Cafe Du Monde, the restaurant that serves only beignets and drinks. There isn't much to say on this except that these are the most delicious things on the planet, and friendships were made by sharing a plate of these bad boys.

The Mississippi River is beautiful. Not in the most conventional of ways, but more of the "I just walked a block out of the city and I can finally see nature again" sort of way. The sky was clear, it was a little cold, but it was so relaxing to step out of the craziness for a second. If I have any regrets about the trip, it was not going to the river more than this one time.

To prevent this post from being extraordinarily long, I'll be making a part 2 to come tomorrow!

10 Things I Love About Traveling!

I'm currently in New Orleans! I've been waiting for this trip for almost a year, and I can't believe I'm here! My school has a thing called interterm where you can take one class for a month, and this year I'm taking a class on Voodoo where we travel to New Orleans for a week! More on the trip later though, here's 10 things I love about traveling! Not in any particular order.

1. Airports

Something about the abundance of people with everyone on their own journey and destination makes me happy. Although I'm not a huge fan of the hours of waiting that happens there.

2. Hotel Beds

Is it just me or do hotel beds give you either the best or worst night's sleep of your life. For the most part, I end up getting great sleep in hotel beds (except the one here in New Orleans! Our hotel is haunted, and I'm absolutely terrified and can't sleep.)

3. People

I love meeting and talking to people who live in the area that I'm visiting. It's a great way to learn the in's and out's of the city, and where to get great recommendations for anything your heart desires!

4. FOOD

Okay, this is my absolute favorite part about traveling. Although I'm a picky eater I always love going to new restaurants and seeing what they have to offer. Here in New Orleans, where food is such a huge part of the culture, there's an absurd amount of restaurants. I can't wait to eat everywhere! So far, the beignets from Cafe Du Monde are my absolute favorite.

5. History

Every place in the world has it's own unique history, and being a history major, I really enjoy learning about it.

6. Exploring

I've only been here for two days, but I feel like I've seen so much of New Orleans. Exploring is one of my favorite things to do while traveling because I feel like I have to take in as much as I can before I leave for home! I especially love traveling to the not so touristy spots to see something a little different than what's in the guidebooks.

7. No Responsibilities

If you're on a school trip, like me, you have some responsibilities, but for the majority of vacations you have none! Now's the time to relax and give in to your surroundings. Do what you please, whenever you please!

8. Being with Friends/Family

I'm with so many great people on this trip, and I know I'll be coming back with more friends than I started with. Spending time with fun people is what makes me love travel!

9. Photography

I love taking pictures of anything and everything, and traveling definitely brings out the photographer in me. (Be sure to see what I'm up to on my instagram!)

10. Experience/Adventure

I feel that it's best to live in the moment while traveling. There can be so many opportunities that people pass by, but personally I want to do as much as I can. When is the next time I'll be back in this place and doing whatever it is I'm doing? I can sit in a room any day of the week, but when will I ever get the chance to eat alligator again? (By the way, I ate alligator and it was a proud moment for my picky self.) Do the things you won't get the chance to do anywhere else, you won't regret it!

Liebster Award

Kicking off the weekend, I was going to do a post about what will be coming up next week, (exciting things!) but that will just have to wait!

A few days ago I was nominated for the Liebster Award by Jessica from The Petite Diaries and I'm beyond thankful!

When I started this blog I never thought I would be reaching out to so many people. I made this blog for myself, and I just think it's so amazing that the blogging community is so open and friendly, and I love that I've met some great and supportive people through it.

The Liebster Award is given to bloggers with under 200 followers on any individual social media platform from fellow bloggers. In order to accept the award, the nominator will provide 11 questions about you and your blog that you must answer.

Question time!

1. How did you decide on the title of your blog?

My blog was originally called That Collegiate Girl, and I basically took the fact that I am a girl in college and giving advice about college would be the topic of most of my posts. However, I wasn't in love with the name, and it just didn't feel right, so I switched to The Classic Brunette! I'm a natural brunette (even though when I started the blog I was a redhead, and still am because box dye doesn't want to give me my brown hair back just yet) and felt that I would classify my style as classic. I don't regularly go for trends, and my fashion sense is simple, but preppy. It felt like this new name really fit.

2. What made you decide to start your blog?

I had a difficult time starting college last year, and I thought that my experiences and advice could be useful to someone else who was feeling the same things I was. For a long time, I was on the fence about making a fashion/beauty blog, and I felt like I could accomplish both a lifestyle/college and fashion/beauty in this blog. I had been reading Carly's (The College Prepster) blog all summer, and decided to go ahead and start it. Best decision!

3. What is your favorite food?

I would have to say the ham and cheese croissants from Copenhagen bakery in Burlingame, CA. It's right by my dad's work, and I've been eating them for years now. They're so simple, but so good!! I love them so much I even tried to recreate them here for you guys!

4. Where is your favorite place to shop?

That's a tough one. But, because I am a cheap shopper, I'm going to have to say Forever 21. Some people say that their clothes fall apart fast, but I personally have never had that problem! I still have some clothes from there that have stayed in perfect shape for many many years! If I'm going on the more expensive side, I would say J.Crew though. I want to buy everything in there!

5. If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be & why?

I would probably go to my mom's old house in Portsmouth, England. She was born there and came to the US when she was eight, and I've never visited! She hasn't been back to England since she was in her twenties I believe, so I would love to go visit with her.

6. What's your favorite pastime other than blogging?

Reading! I really do love to read, even though there isn't a lot of time for it while I'm in school. During the summer and winter breaks I get all my reading in!

7. What's your favorite post you've written & why?

My favorite post I've written is Tips and Advice for Freshman Year because I put a lot of effort into it, and it's advice I truly want every college freshman to know. College is a difficult time because there are so many changes, and freshman year is probably the hardest year of them all. It's also my favorite because it means a lot to me on a personal level, and I hope it will help those who look at it.

8. A long lost relative gives you a large sum of money, what do you do with it?

I would put a good amount of it in the bank, and then if it was a really huge amount of money I would use some to travel with my family.

9. What is your all time favorite movie?

My favorite movie is definitely Bride Wars. It may not be the best movie of all time, but for some reason I really love it. It's cheesy, and romantic, and it has Anne Hathaway, and I've probably watched it a hundred times.

10. Where do you see your blog going in the next year?

My blog is still very new, so even though I have big dreams for this blog, I think I'm just going to continue to write what I love, and hopefully others will continue to find my blog inspiring. I have a long list of posts planned for the future, and am excited to share them all with you guys.

11. Where does your blog inspiration come from?

I find inspiration everywhere. From reading other blogs, from walking around town, even watching tv or movies! Mostly, my inspiration comes from what's going on in my life.

Here are my nominations!

Cristina from Cristina on Campus, Megan from Southern Charmed, Allie from Rush & Teal, Tiffany from Kitchen 512, and Jessie from The Cluttered Counter.

To accept your award you must:
Answer all 11 questions given to you, comment on this post with a link to your answers so I can read them, in your post be sure to link back to the person that nominated you, & nominate up to 10 other bloggers for the award!

I'm going to be using the same questions that Jessica gave me!

1. How did you decide on the title of your blog?
2. What made you decide to start your blog?
3. What is your favorite food?
4. Where is your favorite place to shop?
5. If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be & why?
6. What's your favorite pastime other than blogging?
7. What's your favorite post you've written & why?

Layers and Layers

Another outfit post! Finally! You can totally ignore my weird faces in these pictures (still not sure what to do with it in front of the camera sometimes).

Wearing: Denim Jacket (similar), Sweater (similar), Leggings, Boots (similar), Scarf (similar
It's starting to get colder in Southern California, but really it's what everyone else in the US calls Fall. California Winters aren't the coldest thing in the world, but they are windy at times! This day was especially windy, so layering up was a must!

My resident photographer (and roommate) Nicole took these photos for me.

Social Networks

I thought now was as good of a time as ever to re-introduce my other social networks and ways to contact me. I've mentioned them in a couple posts before, but this is just a more direct explanation of what you will find on each platform, and an easier way to connect to me.

Instagram

What You'll Find There:

Lately a lot of food! Haha, but it's really a more personal day to day look at my life. Sometimes I post updates from the blog on there as well, but 90% of the time it's content not found here. I like to post all of the interesting things that I see, do, visit, make, etc on there. I post on there every other day or so, making it my most used social media site. Plus, even when I'm not posting I'm on there liking up a storm! Use the tag #theclassicbrunette to get my attention!

What You'll Find There:

This is where all my random thoughts and live updating goes. I tweet when I have new posts up, when I want a snack, when I find something at the mall that I love, essentially I tweet when I have any sort of emotion about something. This is a very real version of my life if that's what you would like to call it. Follow if you want to see into the mind of a crazy college blogger. (who might just tweet about 90's nostalgia and school too much)

What You'll Find There:

Everything I find inspirational. Whether it be fashion trends I want to try out (see above), blog post ideas, new recipes to try, or words of kindness, Pinterest is my everything. I can spend hours on there and not be bored. It's also the place where I find all of my craft ideas! If you think of something, or need help with a project, it's guaranteed that there is a post on Pinterest that can help you out.

Other Ways To Contact Me:

I made an email address just for blog questions, concerns, or suggestions! So please email me at theclassicbrunette@gmail.com if you need anything!

The Best Is Yet To Come

I love New Years. Everyone is still in the holiday spirit, I can see my birthday on the horizon, and most people seem to be in a great mood. I'm not a huge believer in resolutions, at least for myself since I tend to break them, but I am a believer in setting goals for myself. I've learned in years past that if I push myself to keep up with my goals for at least a month, I'll stick with it.

One // Blog more consistently

Since starting my blog, I've pretty much been all over the place with when I blog. During the summer I tried to post once a day, but once school started that wasn't an option. Then I was posting sporadically, and would forget for a couple days. More recently, I've been blogging around every 3 days, and that schedule has been treating me nicely. I have some amazing things coming up for 2015, and my hope is to share them with you as they're happening, not weeks after they're over.

Two // Explore Often

Whether this mean traveling abroad, or just locally, I want to see what's out there. It seems like such a waste to have access to such a wonderful world and not see what I can. Although financially I'm not at the best place for it, I can definitely make time for trips to Los Angeles or San Francisco and explore the spots I haven't visited. I traveled a little in 2014 (Lake Tahoe, San Diego), I want to make more of an effort to get outside my local bubble.

Three // Chose Healthy Options

Not necessarily limiting this one to eating habits, this goal is for a lifestyle change. I pledge to take the stairs more often, order water with my meal instead of soda. "Little by little, a little becomes a lot." I'm choosing to make a healthier me, and anything that comes with these choices is just a bonus.

Four // Try New Things

More specifically food. I'm known as the horribly picky eater to everyone who knows me, and I want that to change. I feel as though this will be my most challenging goal as I've tried to expand my food choices in the past, and it always ends in failure. This year I want to start out very slow, and eat things that are out of my comfort zone, but not put myself in a situation that makes me extremely uncomfortable.

Five // Make More 'Me' Time

Sometimes I get so caught up with everything going on around me, school, family, friends, sorority, I forget about myself. I need to make time for my physical therapy exercises, my sleep schedule, my alone time, and anything else that helps me stay relaxed.

What are your goals for the new year?
