Dorm Room DIY

Nothing makes a dorm feel more like home than some nice artwork. Whether homemade or bought at a store, a simple painting or sketch gives a room a more lived in feeling. But, when you don't have hundreds or even a hundred to spend on art for a dorm room, crafting is the way to go!

For my freshman year of college, I didn't have too much dorm art besides something my parents bought for me at Bed Bath and Beyond.

This year, however, I decided that I don't want to spend money on things that I can probably make myself! I have already made a few DIY pieces that will show up on the blog a little later, but for now I'm going to show you one of my favorites that I've done and how to make it!

As you may know if you follow me on pinterest, I have a love for all the crafting ideas that I see there, and I also love inspiring quotes! So I went through my old pins to see if there was a quote that would help me get through my year and keep me motivated to do well, and I found this lovely one by the late great Maya Angelou.

Luckily for me, the design for the quote was already there so I didn't have to do much creativity on that part.

Here's what you will need to make this an attractive piece of art for your dorm:

A blank canvas (I got a 6 pack of 8' x 10' ones at Ross for $8.99!)
Black acrylic paint (Go with the cheapest one from your local craft store)
Gold acrylic paint (I used Martha Stewart's metallic craft paint in Pale Bronze on sale for 99 cents at Michaels)
Pink acrylic paint (I used Folkart paint in Hot Pink on sale for $1.29 at Michaels, although you could really use any color for this part of the project)
Paint brushes (the smaller the better for detailing and tiny lines!)

I decided to leave out the -Maya Angelou part, but feel free to include it in your craft! I started this by drawing the artwork on with a regular pencil, erasing all mistakes that I made if I didn't like them. If you don't feel confident enough to freehand draw, simply print and trace it on!

After this I painted the smaller words and circle in black as best I could to follow the lines and painted the word "Work" in a sparkly gold that I already had and used the hot pink above as a pop of color on the bottom.

At this point, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the canvas as it felt a little bare. I really wanted the word "Work" to stand out, so I knew I needed a better gold. Thats when I went to the store and bought the metallic gold listed above and painted over what I had. I also decided to add polka dots to the pink to make it more fun! I used a dime to trace on the polka dots and it was extremely easy to get perfect circles!

I'm sure this will brighten up my dorm room and inspire me to work a little harder on those assignments that just feel like I can't finish! I see things like this on etsy all the time, sure with a little better lines, but for $35+ that's just way too expensive! All in all this cost me a little under $4 to make and I think it turned out great!

Hopefully this will help give you some creativity for your own crafts! Be sure to use the hashtag #theclassicbrunette on instagram to show me how you DIY!
